Censuring The Censors

Rod W coordinates and maintains these entries. He also maintains The Chopping List, a comprehensive guide to movies which have been censored in Australia.

For Whom the Bell Tolls

The original theatrical release of the film lasted for 170 minutes, which equates to a PAL video length of about 163 minutes. Under pressure from cinema owners, the film was chopped down to about 130 minutes (equivalent to about 125 minutes of PAL video). Most of the chopped footage was thought to be lost but Universal managed to locate much of the material and have added it back into the film to bring the running time back up to 166 minutes (which is 158 minutes of PAL video as here). Whilst obviously not censorship per se, most versions of the film seen to date on television and home video were reduced in length and this is the first time that we have had the near-original film available for home video.
