Censuring The Censors

Mulholland Dr.

There is a censorship issue with this title, though not from a direction that you would expect. Concerned about possible exploitation of the film's star, Laura Harring, director David Lynch and Laura agreed that the nude full frontal image of her at 94:48 (PAL DVD timing) would be partially obscured in a fashion that would preserve the actress' dignity but would not disturb the flow of the film. The offending image on the DVD has been modified by having the actress' genital area blurred for the few seconds it is on screen. This shot takes place at night and in a darkened room, so while the blurring effect is visible if looked for, it is done in a way that is not distracting to the flow of the film. As this modification has been made by the director of the film and not the studio or a particular country's censorship board, this doesn't fall under the normal definition of censorship. The modification is not nearly as distracting as it sounds.
