The original film ran 131 minutes. It was heavily censored on initial release, and this combined with the advent of talking pictures meant that the film was not widely seen and disappeared from view almost immediately. It wasn't until the 1950s that it was seen again by a wide audience and appreciated for the film that it is. The US release was cut down to 85 minutes and a happy ending was tacked on. The 1983 restoration brought the film back to 103 minutes, and this 1997 restoration has the full running time back in place.
