September 16, 1972 is a day that Manly-Warringah supporters will always cherish.After 25 years of toil and a handful of near misses, the J.J.Giltinan Shield finally found a home on Sydney's northern beaches. Having waited so long for their first title, Mnaly had no intention of giving it up without a fight and that's how the 1973 grand final turned out. Thanks to a fierce challenge from a Cronulla side that was appearing in their first decider, the two seaside clubs waged a turf war that became infamous for its brutality and toughness.
Ultimately, it was the brilliance of the great Bob Fulton that made the difference, with two superb solo tries in a gripping 10-7 triumph.
