1972 Manly versus Easts September 16, 1972 is a day that Manly-Warringah supporters will always cherish. After 25 years of toil and a handful of near misses, the J.J.Giltinan Shield finally found a home on Sydney's northern beaches. Under the coaching of Ron Wiley and captaincy of Fred Jones, the Sea Eagles soared higher than anyone when they withstood Eastern Suburbs 19-14 in a grand final that, for all its controversy, was eventually won by the best team on the day and the one that had proved its superiority over the course of the season. 1973 Manly versus Cronulla Having waited so long for their first title, Mnaly had no intention of giving it up without a fight and that's how the 1973 grand final turned out. Thanks to a fierce challenge from a Cronulla side that was appearing in their first decider, the two seaside clubs waged a turf war that became infamous for its brutality and toughness. Ultimately, it was the brilliance of the great Bob Fulton that made the difference, with two superb solo tries in a gripping 10-7 triumph.
