Fresh from defeating Geelong in the Wizard Cup Grand Final, the Saints would again face the Cats in the opening round of 2004.

Round 2 St. Kilda v Essendon
One of the most testing encounters for the young Saints of coach Grant Thomas. A physical examination at the hands of the Bombers. Despite errant kicking St. Kilda would lead at every change and move to a 34 point win. The iron man for the Saints would be Aaron Hamill and the win would put the Saints on top of the AFL ladder.
