Provocative 'guerrilla-style' filmmaker Gregg Araki pulls no punches with a realism that is hard to shake, in this most challenging, high-risk and heartfelt movie. His liveliest, most deeply felt fiction, he describes as a "kinda twisted cross between avant-garde experimental cinema and a queer John Hughes flick." Confronting the tenacious subculture of gay and lesbian teenagers, seemingly isolated from the rest of the world, ostensibly disengaged from everything, TOTALLY F**ED UP explores the problems and emergent identities of adolescent queer youth. Six interconnected, racially diverse teenagers contend with AIDS, alienation, suicide, drugs and gay-bashing, as they muddle through with wit, irony and wide-open hearts. As a lively and funny, sensitive and honest story of troubled gay youth, their struggle of adolescence is bad enough, but as gay or lesbian teenagers, life's growing pains ache even more.
