Consistently ranked amongst the greatest films ever made, Buster Keaton's The General is so brilliantly conceived and executed that it continues to inspire awe and laughter with every viewing. Johnnie Gray has two loves in his life: his locomotive and his girl, Annabelle Lee. When Civil War breaks out in 1861, he is refused acceptance by the army because he is more useful as an engineer than as a soldier. Annabelle, not understanding the reason, shuns him as a coward. A year later, The General, with Annabelle on board, is hijacked by a group of Northern spies. Johnnie goes in pursuit behind enemy lines to rescue Annabelle and reclaim The General.
