In 1938, Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre Company produced a radio adaptation of HG Wells' classic Sci-Fi novel, 'The War of the Worlds'. The show was broadcast as though it was a real news event, with martians invading the eastern United States. It caused panic in many cities. This fascinating documentary charts the events of that broadcast evening and its after-effects and gives a biography of Orson Welles and his career. Also included are interviews with commentators and footage of current events of the time that created the atmosphere of fear and unease felt by many in the USA in the year before war broke out in Europe. The Day That Panicked America is a truly remarkable look at one of broadcasting's most defining moments. The power of the media was never so clearly shown. Also included is an audio CD of the original radio recording; hear the programme just as startled audiences did in 1938. This dramatic broadcast still has the power to thrill listeners today.
