During the turbulent days of the Great Depression, aspiring writer Tom Raynor, a country boy from Gundagai, arrives in Sydney to find work. But he encounters much more than just a job and lodgings when he arrives at the Dundee Palace, an inner-city pub owned by the Mendels, a family of Russian Jews.
