It seems fitting that theatre's protesting, angry young man John Osborne (Look Back In Anger, The Entertainer) should write a play about one of history's social revolutionaries, and father of Protestantism, Martin Luther.Luther was the ideological firebrand in the 16th century who challenged the hierarchy of the Catholic Church and what he saw as Papal excesses. Using this historical character, Osborne gives us a psychological insight into rebellion, both spiritually and politically, which is still relevant today. The acting throughout is exemplary. Stacy Keach (American History X) gives a career defining performance, effortlessly conveying the passion and determination of the architect of the Reformation, and he is given stellar support from Judi Dench (Mrs Brown), Patrick Magee (A Clockwork Orange), Robert Stephens (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) and Leonard Rossiter (Rising Damp). Luther may well be Osborne's masterpiece and this gripping film version is helmed by veteran cinematographer turned director Guy Green.
