A perfect aristocratic couple in a seemingly perfect marriage lead an idle life in a gothic country estate until the arrival of a dashing, penniless young socialite ushers passion, infidelity...and death. A fine ensemble cast (including Judi Dench, Angelica Huston and Alec Guinness) brilliantly capture the emotional manipulation and cruelty explored in Evelyn Waugh’s famous novel set among the fashionable aristocracy in ’30s England.Director Charles Sturridge (who also adapted Waugh's Brideshead Revisited) contrives a bitter, ironic and dark portrait of a marriage (based on Waugh's own) destroyed, not only by Lady Brenda's (Kristen Scott Thomas) hurtful infidelity, but her cuckolded husband's blind faith in tradition and morality. Betrayed and depressed, Lord Tony finally takes off into the South American wilderness with an eccentric explorer (Alec Guinness) to face his demons, and his fate.
