Ingmar Bergman examines the strained relationship between a reconciled mother and daughter in this intimate 1978 character study. Charlotte Andergast, a successful international concert pianist, is devestated by the loss of her partner Leonardo, leaving her in a state of lonliness and bewilderment. Soon after Leonardo's death, Charlotte's estranged daughter Eva contacts her and asks her to visit her home in small-town Norway. Having not seen each other for seven years, Charlotte takes this opportunity to attempt reconciliation. For several days the two women confrot each other, revealing a lifetime's worth of repression. The resulting painful revelations are crucial to their future. An intelligent, emotionally-wrenching and involving masterpiece, examining love: the presence of, the absence of, the longing for, love's lies, love that is deformed and love as our sole chance of survival. Ingrid Bergman's final appearance on film earned her an Oscar nomination.
