Winner of the Grand Jury prize at Cannes (1989), this endearing romantic comedy stars Gérard Depardieu as Bernard, a successful car dealer with a beautiful, sophisticated wife who becomes strangely attracted to his dowdy temporary secretary. A passionate affair ensues, and Bernard's wife, though not unused to her husband's indiscretions, takes action to rescue their marriage.Testing the cliché that adultery holds a French marriage together, Trop Belle Pour Toi (Too Beautiful for You) twists the husband-wife-mistress triangle as Bernard chases a woman he should be married to, and is married to a woman he should be having an affair with. Director Bertrand Blier (Menage, Going Places), backed by pitch-perfect performances from Depardieu and Carole Bouquet (L'Enfer) as his cuckolded wife (they were later engaged in real life), creates a witty, inventive romantic farce that cleverly parodies the pretensions of the 'perfect' marriage.
