Toshiro Mifune stars as Kingo Gondo, a wealthy industrialist and corporate Machiavelli on the brink of unrivalled success in the Japanese shoe industry when he becomes the target of extortion. But in a cruel twist of fate it's his chauffeur’s son who is kidnapped in his own son's place - and so Gondo must choose to either pay the huge ransom and lose his empire, or else take responsibility for the boy's life. Based on Ed McBain's pulp thriller King's Ransom, High and Low is a tightly directed and tense film noir. Filled with his 1960's police action, Kurosawa's superb film takes us deep into the insufferable heat and seedy, heroin-addicted underworld of postwar Tokyo.
