On a remote ranch in Wyoming, Einar Gilkyson (Redford) spends his days fixing what's broke and bickering with his ranch-hand and best friend Mitch (Freeman). Into this insular, lonely life comes a woman from his past - Einar's widowed daughter-in-law, Jean (Lopez). Einar blames her for the death of his son and hasn't even met the 11 year old girl Jean brings with her - his grand-daughter. But Jean hasn't come of her own volition - she's running away from something that will force this fractured family to confront long buried secrets and face the truth at last. Through universal themes of frailty, resilience and redemption comes a story both epic and intimate, where the family is torn apart by tragedy and brought back together again
