On the evening of December 7, 1998 a host of stars turned out for a spectacular 50th Anniversary tribute to one of the best loved and most influential singers of our time, Mr. Tony Bennett. Dubbed "An All-Star Tribute," the event was broadcast live on A&E Network from Sony Music Studios in New York City, and comprised the 10th instalment of Live By Request, the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning live music series created by Mr. Bennett in 1996.
The DVD you now hold in your hands is a complete record of that star-studded evening, and includes spoken testimonials to Mr. Bennett's artistry from a wide array of musicians representing nearly every genre of music (Billy Joel, Elvis Costello, Burt Bacharach, Kiss, Madonna and Sting), as well as tributes from the worlds of film, television and Broadway (George Clooney, Billy Crystal, Cameron Diaz, Harrison Ford, Matt Lauer, Gregory Peck and Joe Pesci).
Because having the fans call the shots is at the very centre of Mr. Bennett's concept for the Live By Request series, An All-Star Tribute also features Bennett aficionados phoning in from across the country to request their favourite songs, including such classics as "Fly Me To The Moon," "Steppin' Out With My Baby," "It Was Me," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "For Once In My Life," "Watch What Happens," "Chicago" and "The Good Life." Also included are musical tributes from country music superstar Clint Black, who pays homage to Tony Bennett's take on the Hank Williams' classic "Cold, Cold Heart," and songstress Natalie Cole who covers the Bennett classic "Smile," among many other surprises.
