For Deanna Durbin's first film in two years Universal hired respected French director Jean Renois to helm what was to be Deanna's first dramatic role. However when the film was released it included songs and the director's credit went to Bruce Manning, the film's producer. Miss Durbin plays a missionary, Ruth Kirke, who passes herself off as a rich widow, Mrs Holliday, in order to smuggle a group of orphans into the United States.
