One of the best-loved animation series’ of the last 30 years, Mysterious Cities of Gold was a French/Japanese collaboration, was dubbed in English, and aired on ABC TV throughout the late 80s and early 90s.
In the tradition of Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, the series features riveting characters, fantastic animation, and a magnificent plot that starts in Barcelona in 1532, and follows a young orphan called Esteban as he searches the New World for both his father and the ‘Mysterious Cities of Gold’.

When Esteban accompanies a party of Spaniards searching for gold in the New World, he is joined on his quest by Zia, an Incan girl kidnapped from her family who is also searching for her father, and Tao, the last descendant of the sunken empire of Hiva. Aboard the magnificent Golden Condor their adventures take them through an Incan empire under Spanish attack, to the vast Amazon forest, and the land of the Mayas. Resisting attack from tyrants and traitors, their goal is not gold but a long-awaited reunion with their loved ones.
