In a modern day fairy tale, Lucy is a young girl who has never known tenderness; the long suffering daughter of prize fighter Battling Burrows. Frequently beaten by her brutal father, she is forced out into the street where she finds sanctuary with a Chinese shopkeeper. The two form a romantic bond but all goes astray for the young lovers (sic) when Lucy's father discovers his daughter's whereabouts., Small in scale compared to Griffith's mightier projects, Broken Blossoms is nevertheless one of his most beautiful films and a landmark of the silent era.
