Noriko has little interest in marriage despite the urging of those around her, but Shukichi comes to realise it is his responsibility to oversee a suitable marriage for his daughter. In concert with his sister Masa (Haruko Sugimura), Shukichi begins a campaign to convince Noriko that she cannot remain with him forever, but must start a life of her own. Directed by the most delicate of filmmakers, Late Spring is a gentle and contemplative glimpse into the private life of an ordinary family, and the competing intergenerational pressures that act upon it.
