The acclaimed director of Time of the Gypsies and Black Cat, White Cat, Emir Kusturica remains one of Europe's greatest auteurs, having twice won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This extraordinary black tragi-comedy is an epic tale of love, friendship and betrayal set against the complex historical backdrop of the former Yugoslavia. The story follows two likeable crooks, Blacky and Marko, and a coquettish actress, Natalija (Mirjana Jokovic), as they become embroiled in a world of conflict, self delusion and deceit. As the drunken felons escape into a Belgrade cellar with their families to avoid Hitler's bombs, Marko later emerges to win back Natalija and join the Communist forces under Tito, leaving his best friend underground. A visionary allegory of Balkan vitality, energy, humour and the will to survive, Underground is regarded as the finest achievement of Emir Kusturica's remarkable career and was awarded the highest honour at the Cannes Film Festival.
