Based on Lloyd Douglas' novel of the same name, Douglas Sirk's Magnificent Obsession is one of the most tumultuous melodramas of all time. In his first leading role, Rock Hudson stars as the playboy Bob Merrick, injured in a thrillseeking speedboat accident on a picturesque Californian lake. When the resuscitator used to save his life causes the death of the local doctor, Merrick is scorned by his fellow patients at their remote hospital. In an effort to make right, Merrick visits the doctor's widow, Helen (Jane Wyman in her Oscar®-nominated role), and falls madly in love with her. But things do not go to plan, and Merrick causes a second tragic accident, leaving Helen blinded. Overcome with shame, Merrick resolves to do all within his power to make amends with the object of his desire, and to win her heart.
