A behind the scenes look at Australia’s longest running and most politically incorrect beauty contest, the Miss Nude Australia Pageant!

The sashed State Finalists line-up. In this beauty pageant no one wants to save the world or the environment, and there’s no mention of feeding starving children. The judges are on a booty quest for good tits and arse. Welcome to a behind the scenes look at Australia’s longest running and most politically incorrect beauty contest, the Miss Nude Australia Pageant!

Drag artiste ‘Madame Josephine’ sits in her familiar dressing room, applying lipstick to prepare as host of the Miss Nude Australia Pageant. For the 18th year in succession Madame Josephine will announce the competitors to a full house at The Crazy Horse Revue nightclub in Adelaide.

The girls each in turn, step out onto the small runway. Using everything at their disposal; a flamboyant or cheeky outfit to slowly peel away, a pair of increasingly-popular dancing poles for minor acrobats and of course the gifts they were born with and the whole point of this show – their looks and stunning (sometimes ‘modified’) bodies. They dance, tease and strip their way to a common goal - to win!

The judges, a mixture of pageant “experts” and the occasional B Grade celebrity, sit and stringently mark the girls, based on criteria laid out in the judging.

“Judge's are directed to look hard and long at each performer. When they judge her face, they look at her teeth, her smile, and her hair. When they judge her body they look at her proportions, shape and her beauty.”

In a modern society of sexual equality, this competition seems out of place, sexist and sleezy. But in recent years the competition has flourished with a constant flow of young and beautiful girls, keen to compete for the prize of Miss Nude Australia. In the era of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, pretty young women want to be famous for something—even it is for being naked. They enter the Pageant with all the seriousness of a fully clothed Miss Universe title.

Behind the scenes we meet stripper Trinity Porter and her mother “Dazzling Deb”. This charismatic mother-daughter combination debates the pros and cons of Trinity’s chosen profession. Her mother proudly confirms that Trinity showed early signs of the performer she would eventually become when she was a little girl swinging upside down on the veranda pole in the front yard. Deb laments, “I worry that she won’t find a husband because decent men don’t marry strippers”.

Suzie Q is also a gifted pole dancer. Red-haired and flat chested, she worries that she won’t be able to hold her own in a competition that mainly features busty blondes with spectacular “implants”. Privately she concedes that her boyfriend disapproves of her entering the nude pageant. Meanwhile, fellow contestant “Ellayshay” confides her father doesn’t know she strips for a living. An old fashioned girl at heart, Ellayshay wishes she lived in the 40s when “women were treated like women and dressed like movie stars”. Later, she will strip to fulfill a dying boy’s last wish.

Best Undressed portrays with humour (and without judgement), an appreciation for the spectacle of an event (albeit sometimes bizarre) that brings the women together and challenges their resolve, self esteem and creativity—all in the quest for an unusual sort of fame.
