A restless young man, Vishnu, itches to escape his fate as a hair oil salesman like his father. A 1943 Chevrolet truck beckons, and Vishnu recognises it as his ticket to freedom. He offers to drive the antique Chevy across the Rajasthani desert to the sea, where it has been sold to a local museum. As he sets off across the harsh terrain, he discovers he's not merely transporting a battered vehicle, but an old touring cinema.
Along the way, Vishnu picks up a young chai-wallah, a handy old entertainer and a striking gypsy woman. Together, this ragtag bunch of nomads face excitement, laughter and frustration as they make their way south across parched deserts, searching for water and an elusive fair. But danger lurks even in these vast expanses, and the truck's two projectors and its eccentric collection of films become the keys to their freedom.
