In 16th Century France, Protestants and Catholics wage war in the name of faith and power. Leading the Protestants the young Henry, King of Navarre, goes to Paris to meet with his powerful Catholic rival The King of France, and his mother, Catherine de Medici, Queen of France. The Queen offers him the hand of her daughter Margot - as a sign of reconciliation. The wedding ends in the massacre of Saint Bartholomew and Henry, surviving the carnage, is held a prisioner in the Louve and forced by the Queen to accept the Catholic faith. Henry escapes the Louve and matures to become a monarch who can call himself one of the first true humanists.
