A circus freak, John Merrick (John Hurt - Hellboy, Dogville, Harry Potter) is routinely humiliated by his master Bytes (Freddie Jones - Firefox, Dune, Erik The Viking). Frederick Treves, a renowned surgeon (Anthony Hopkins - Alexander, The Mask Of Zorro, Silence Of The Lambs) is fascinated by this grotesque character and admits him to his clinic. He goes on to discover that despite his outward appearance, Merrick is a surprisingly sensitive and endearing individual.
Shot entirely in Black and White, The Elephant Man is an otherworldly journey that asks the viewer to question the notions of hope and despair, and uncovers the unsettling propensity for humanity to act in the most inhumane ways.
