This exciting, nostalgic tale of barnstorming pilots in the 1920s reunites Robert Redford with George Roy Hill, the Academy Award-winning director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting. Waldo (Redford) makes a living selling rides in Nebraska, and telling tall tales about facing off against Ernst Kessler (Bo Brundin), the Black Knight of Germany, during his days as a World War 1 flying ace. The film depicts his friendly rivalry with Axel Olsson (Bo Svenson), their ill-fated wing-walking act with Axel's girlfriend, Mary Beth (Susan Sarandon), and Waldo's long-dreamed-of dogfight with Kessler. Written by William Goldman, who won an Oscar for Butch Cassidy, from a story by former pilot Hill, it features Margot Kidder (Superman) as Waldo's girlfriend, Maude, and impressive aerial photography
