On receiving a distress call from Uncle Sid, a former business partner of Beka's father, both she and Trance head off to meet him. Beka is shocked to find that Uncle Sid is actually a big business tycoon and becomes very suspicious of his intentions. He offers her ten million guilders for the encoded data of the father's personal journals and videos. When Beka denies any knowledge of this, she and Trance are captured and locked up. After escaping, she explains to Trance that her father actually encoded important information and stored this data in nanobots implanted in her hair.

The Mathematics Of Tears

Rommie encounters her damaged sister ship, the Pax Magellanic, in a suspended state. In boarding and accessing its memory matrix, Rommie finds displays of past action memories in the command room. Jill Pearce, the present Pax commander is found to be Rommie's older sister, the Pax Magellanic in human form. Through complex, past events and the lover of her commander, Jill had disobeyed her oath of self-destruction when in imminent danger. She blew up an entire planet and her crew as a result, during a Nietzchean attack. In a final act of defiance she attacks the Andromeda Ascendant.
