Bobby, an Australian aborigine, has a real knack for picking winners down at the horse track. But he isn't able to enjoy the winnings, largely because he's been dead for a century or two. His mortal remains -- his head in a jar, which mysteriously turns to indicate his picks -- are in the care of a Dublin medical college.
His friends there are very impressed with his luck, especially Brendan Delaney (Robbie Coltrane), a porter and semi-reformed gambling addict who's already burned through the college fund for his daughter, much to the chagrin of his wife (Brenda Blethyn).
With Bobby on his side, Brendan sees an opportunity to get out of the hole, just as his boss (Dan Aykroyd) sees a chance to change his own life. A big score at the Grand National should secure their fortune, but Brendan must protect Bobby from an Australian civil servant who wants to repatriate him and from a hapless posse of gangsters who want to get in on the action.
