Frank Jacobs (Daniel Stern) is a good-guy with a kind heart but frankly, he's a loser. He lives in the middle of nowhere, is married to a complete shrew and runs a sorry old motel offering dusty rooms and stuffed animals as decoration. He is a good singer, though, and belts out original tunes any chance he can get, always hoping for the day he becomes a country and western star like his hero, Johnny Cash.
One evening during open mike night at a local roadhouse, Frank makes the acquaintance of Julie (Lacey Kohl), a fellow singer married to has-been country star Roy Baker (James Caan). After a quarrel, Roy leaves Julie by the side of the road, so Frank offers her a place to stay. Big mistake. Frank's wife Helen (Patrica Richardson) is not a happy camper and after a bizarre showdown, she ends up dead in the tomato patch. And from there, Frank's life takes off on a wild journey with one unexpected twist after another. The tomatoes may be thriving from that unusual fertiliser, but all is not so ripe in Frank's world - or is it.
