On The Edge is a gritty, real life and sometimes shocking tale of adolescent life and its dark side. After a near-fatal accident in a stolen car, 19 year-old rebel Jonathan Breech (Cillian Murphy) is given two choices - prison or a psychiatric hospital. He begrudgingly accepts the latter, though he makes it abundantly clear to his doctor (Stephen Rea) that he doesn't believe in therapy and will do all in his power to anti the system.

He begins the road to realisation when he befriends Toby (Jonathan Jackson), a sensitive, tormented young man who blames himself for his brother's accidental death. At the same time, Jonathan slowly falls for Rachel (Tricia Vessey), the cute suicidal, who constantly tests him, unable to believe that anyone could really love her. Through his growing affection for Rachel and his friendship for Toby, Jonathan finally learns to embrace life…
