As far as I know, Witchfinder General has only been released on DVD in the UK and Australia. In 2001, MGM released the film as The Conqueror Worm on VHS as one of its Midnite Movies. This is reportedly the American-International Pictures (AIP) version, containing the additional nudity, a different synthesizer music score by Lex Baxter, and Vincent Price reading lines from Poe's poem 'The Conqueror Worm' over the opening and closing credits. It also came out on US laserdisc from Image Entertainment in 1991 with The Tomb of Ligeia, and apparently in Europe as well. The Region 4 DVD misses out on: - Production notes by genre doyen Kim Newman.
- Filmographies for Vincent Price, Ian Ogilvy, Rupert Davies, Hilary Dwyer, Robert Russell, Nicky Henson, Bernard Kay, Tony Selby, John Coquillon and Paul Ferris.
The Region 2 DVD misses out on: - Trailers for Cradle of Fear, The Stepfather and Shallow Grave.
While a production history by Mr Newman is an excellent bonus to have, you could find similar details in reference books and on the Internet, though perhaps not as well written. Therefore, technically, the UK DVD from Metrodome wins out, but most antipodean horror fans will be served well by the local Region 4 DVD. Both dish up identical transfers and include the Michael Reeves retrospective. What more could you axe for?
