Cry Freedom (Blu-ray) (1987)

Another enthralling epic from director Richard Attenborough, Cry Freedom is a superb chronicle of true events that occurred in a turbulent 1970s South Africa, when the fight against apartheid intensified. I wouldn't exactly call it highly enjoyable, but it's a fine historical drama bolstered by superb actors and convincing production values. Arriving on Blu-ray courtesy of Umbrella Entertainment, the technical presentation is very satisfying, as the film greatly benefits from the high definition upgrade. Although no extras are included on the disc, this is still a worthwhile buy. Recommended.

In Everybody Knows Laura (Penelope Cruz) returns to the village where she was born with her two children to attend the wedding of her sister. But then Laura’s 16 year old daughter is kidnapped and a ransom demanded; it seems to be an inside job so everyone, including her old childhood flame Paco (Javier Bardem), comes under suspicion as the family starts to tear itself apart in resentments, mistrust, suspicion and old, half buried secrets that “everybody knows”.

Showdown has a decent premise and a harder edge than a usual Audie Murphy western but at the end of the day it is still a traditional 1950 / 60s western where the conclusion is never in doubt. Showdown is included in the 14 disc / 14 film set Audie Murphy Ultimate Western Collection from ViaVision.
