Master Polish director, Andrzej Wajda, received an Honorary Academy Award(R) in 1999 for almost five decades of work, beginning with his stunning 'war trilogy' detailing Polish resistance to Soviet and Nazi occupation during WWII. During the 50s, a young Wajda created three brilliant war dramas about the tragedy of the Polish resistance movement, beginning with his first-ever feature, A Generation (1955). The story of a wayward teen living on the outskirts of occupied Warsaw who joins the underground in a desperate bid to liberate his homeland, Wadja's style was brutal and confronting yet artful and expressionistic. His second film, Kanal (1957), sees members of the doomed Warsaw uprising escape into the hell of the city sewers as the Nazis approach, and won the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, giving Wadja international acclaim. His masterpiece was Ashes and Diamonds (1958), which interweaves the fate of Poland with one man, a resistance fighter who becomes an anti-communist assassin at the end of the war but also finds love.
